Artist Statement
Deforestation & The Land

The land has always been a reference for me. Through my early work as a watercolorist, I painted landscapes and still life. As my art developed in medium, so did my ideas, which led to questions of combining formalism, globalization and issues concerning the environment. I began combining abstraction and representation in an attempt to present the issues and situations, with no intended outcome or expected goal. Through this form, I am always looking for ways my work can negotiate the worlds of painting, photography, and digital imagery in an attempt to realize and communicate my ideas to the viewer.

Deforestation and the Land deals with the topography and cartography of the land, coinciding with the issue of deforestation in many parts of the world. It is my hope that my work will help to begin a dialogue in order to bring an awareness of the beauty of this earth and a realization of how fragile it really is. The Things Fall Apart series came directly out of this theme.
